There are a lot of really great & useful Photoshop tutorials available on the internet for designers to learn new skills. However, learning through detailed / in-depth tutorials can take a really long time to understand and sometimes, newer Photoshop users aren’t able to follow the tutorials.
On this post, we gather some of Quick & Useful Photoshop Tips that will help you during your design process. It’s ideal for less experienced Photoshop users or for those who want to learn some new skills without much time available. Enjoy!
Some computer acronyms :
CONTROL = CTRL
COMMAND = CMD
1. Give Your Layers Appropriate Names
At one point, you will working with huge number of layers in one document. If you don’t keep your layers organized, it’s very hard or almost impossible to easily find a layer you want to work on.
2. Merge or Group Layers
To merge the active layer with the layer below it, press CTRL + E (for PC user) or CMD + E (for Mac user).

3. Quick Zoom In
An easy & quick way to zoom in is to hold down the SPACEBAR + CTRL (for PC user) or SPACEBAR + CMD (for Mac user) and drag the cursor over the area you want to enlarge.
4. Draw Straight Lines
To draw a straight line with any of the brush tools, just click, hold the SHIFT key, and click again where you want the line to end. Photoshop will automatically draw a straight line between the two points.
5. Hide & Seek
Press the F key to cycle through different screen modes. Press TAB to hide the tools.
6. Quickly Change Brush Sizes
Use the square bracket keys, [ and ] to change the brush size. You also can press SHIFT + square brackets keys to change the hardness of the brush.
7. Move Around The Canvas
Just press and hold down the SPACEBAR key, the hand icon will appear on the screen, allowing you to move around your canvas.
8. Quick Desaturate
Press SHIFT + CMD (for Mac user) or CTRL + U (for PC user) to remove all the color (it’s called “Desaturate”) and make your image grayscale while still in RGB mode. Note : Using the channel mixer will produce a better result.
9. Smart Objects
Smart Objects are layers that contain image data from raster or vector images. You can scale, rotate, skew, distort, perspective transform, or warp a layer without losing original image data or quality. To convert image to a Smart Object, right click on image layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.
10. Smart Filters
An image, after converting to Smart Objects allow you to remove and re-apply filters without needed to bring back original image and start all over again. Applying Smart Filters just like applying regular filters, Photoshop will automatically changed the filters’ name.
11. Close Multiple Document Windows
You’ve got a lot of Photoshop windows open, and now you want them all to go away. Just hold down the SHIFT key when you go File > Close and Photoshop will close all the open documents.
12. Move Layer Styles
You can move Layer Styles from one layer to another layer, simply by going to the “Layers Palette” and drag and drop the style onto the layer you want to apply it to.
13. Change All Fonts
The font used in several layers can be changed all in one go. Link or select all the type layers together. While holding SHIFT, select the new font from the “Character Palette” or the options bar.
